Understanding the application

Laboratory testing in detail

The laboratory is where you do not yet know what you are going to measure. One day it is characterising a component, the next powering an experimental electrolysis cell or running a converter mock-up.

That context calls for a wide adjustment range and a clear display of the values, so you can move from one set-up to another without reconfiguring the whole station. Front-panel readability matters as much as raw performance.

Industrial R&D laboratories, technical centres and higher education institutions all share these needs: accuracy, protection of the set-up and ease of use for one user after another.

Set-up

The prototype or sample is wired up on the bench.

Voltage and current are adjusted to the required operating point.

Behaviour is recorded and compared with the initial hypothesis.

The parameters are changed and the test is run again.

Why a laboratory power supply is not just a generator

In research, the power supply protects the set-up as much as it powers it. A properly set current limit stops you destroying a one-off prototype on its first test.

Microlab was designed in that spirit: voltage or current regulation, fine adjustment, direct display of values and, depending on the model, 2- or 4-quadrant operation. The rack and back-of-cabinet versions then allow the same electronics to be built into a permanent bench, without changing part number.
